I was so thrilled to volunteer for Census 2016 in Houston by working a recruitment table at the Chinese Lunar Festival in Houston.
As many know, the Census usually comes every 10 years (next one in 2020) to count every single person living in the United States, including people who are not documented and those who are homeless or in prison. However, the Census decided to do a test run in West Houston to try out new software they developed for smartphones and tablets. If this test is successful, it could save the Census Bureau hundreds of millions of dollars in the future.
My job was to pass out recruitment fliers and to tell everyone I could talk to that the Census is hiring 500 - 600 workers at $23.25/hour to conduct this test Census, which will take place from May to July 1, 2016 in West Houston.
As you can see, I had some moments where no one came to my table. I also had a minute to enjoy the Lunar festival and the food. It was such a great experience. Thanks Census for allowing me to serve.
