Thanksgiving Volunteer Opportunities in the Houston Area

Thanksgiving is only two weeks away and unfortunately, many families won't have a feast waiting for them at home. This year, I plan on serving at the Thanksgiving Big Feast at the George R. Brown. I can't wait to put a smile on the faces of fellow residents.
If you live in the Houston area and would like to get involved as well, here are several volunteer opportunities on Thanksgiving:
Join thousands of participants Houston's largest Thanksgiving Day race benefitting Sheltering Arms Senior Services. The event features a wheelchair 10K and 5K races as well as a kids run/walk. Areas of volunteer opportunities include promotion, registration packet pick-up, cheering stations and more. Sheltering Arms is an organization that provides resources and assistance to Houston's elderly.

Over 35,000 Houstonians attend the annual Thanksgiving Big Feast at the George R. Brown Convention Center. The event, which was originally intended only for the homeless, has now also opened its doors to those who are unable to be with family on Thanksgiving. Volunteer shifts are available to help put on a traditional holiday meal that includes turkey, dressing and all the accompanying staples.
Interfaith Ministries will coordinate meal deliveries to the city's homebound elderly. Meals are retrieved at First Presbyterian Church and are distributed to homes all over Houston by generous volunteers. Meal pick-up begins at mid-morning, and most volunteers have completed their assignment by early afternoon.
Volunteer Houston coordinates visits each Thanksgiving Day to local nursing homes by volunteers of all ages, coordinating volunteers from the Cy-Fair Houston location or central location in the Upper Kirby District as a meeting place. Visits typically last between 45 and 90 minutes.
